WINGWORD POETRY PRIZE 2020
As much as I absolutely love the raw and expansive energy that comes with performing on stage, it is also a great honour to have my poems published. On that note I am very honoured to be part of India's largest annual poetry competition and to be selected and published in its Wingword Poetry Prize Anthology 2020.
Poem: Kali’s Dance
"This piece of poetry is a stentorian poetic tribute to the celestial strength and the power of the Goddess Kali and is surrealistically beautiful in its approach. The spiritual ode announces the arrival of goddess Kali, replete with her ferocious rage and vigour to obliterate the injustice in the world.
The verses present a very visual, mystical and lucid description of the milieu that the wrath of Kali brings and the sensory palette of the poem possesses a distinct alchemic and aural quality. The poem is lyrical and brims with devotion whilst presenting a charming vignette of births, revolutions and rebirths. The repetition of “she dances” makes the poem all the more ethereal. The poem is meticulously written and the writing prowess of the poet is evident. "

INTERVIEW WITH THE FRENCH AMERICAN CENTER
POETRY AND DANCE COLLABORATE IN BARCELONA
Nav Vilain and Carles Casallachs merge the worlds of poetry and dance in an improvised performance where words flow and movements speak.
We take the sound emitted by a poet on stage and the movement a body creates. We place them on the same level and treat them equally with invented guidelines that can treat voice and body in the same way and we explore the various ways in which they can affect each other. We encourage a symbiosis that provides neither plot, nor illustration, nor narrative, but is based on fragmentation, rhythm, repetition, with emphasis placed on defining the complicity between the two presences on stage.
Three poems exploring the themes of denial, acceptance and awakening will be our connecting thread, both in their grammatical and phonetic content and in the shared vision they create.

BRIGHTON FRINGE REVIEW "BROADWAY BABY"
A mysterious atmosphere vibrates through the small room in Manchester Street’s Latest Music bar as two women take to the stage and where flowers lie scattered beneath their feet. Nav Vilain’s floor-length red gown contrasts nicely with partner Rain Heron's black veil dress as unusual and intriguing sounds boom from the overhead speakers. French DJ “Tof” Matgorski provides the atmospheric soundtrack for the evening.
Vilain and Heron take turns to enthral the audience with their electric poetry
Rain Heron’s voice sounds the phrase “a woman without words” over and over again, each time louder than before. Evidently, this could not be further from the truth in the live performance of 2 Voices 1 Sound. Instead, these words become thought-provoking, intense and unflinchingly honest as Vilain and Heron take turns to enthral the audience with their electric poetry.
As the performance begins, music begins to float alongside the words of passion and aggression. Vilain kicks things off, her words beginning to infect the audience, fitting to the poem itself that discusses the "infection of love" and all its sinister undertones. Her poise and demeanour on stage counterpoint the biting words she spills, quietly and calmly building into a storm of passion and frustration, her voice louder and louder each time.
Heron reveals herself to the audience from beneath her black veil, an introduction to the topic of death within her spoken word. “They take and they never give” she observes as ominous sounds crackle from Matgorski, perfectly flowing alongside Heron’s words.
As the evening continues, the performers take the audience on a journey, the music and words flowing around the otherwise silent, dark room. Emotions run high from everyone on stage as themes of love, death, heartbreak, humanity and equality are explored. Each topic is accompanied by fitting sounds. Love has the sound of jazz piano, the sound of death is jittery and disjointed, until the words mellow out and slow comforting sounds bring the night to a close.
2 Voices 1 Sound takes us on an enthralling journey of two women who most certainly do have words, and a lot to say about them.

....AT THE RECORDING STUDIO "LE CLUB"
Nav takes to the studio "Le Club" to film the poem entitled "Fragile".
This poem is about fragility, yes, but also the strength that comes from being open and honest and allowing ourselves to deeply FEEL our emotions. We may feel uncomfortable and vulnerable here however it is exactly in this space that we learn our individual lessons to be learned. If we are willing to use the situation as our teacher. From here we can choose (or not) to shine a light on the darkness within us. This in turn helps us to grow and evolve into a better version of ourselves....or...we can choose to repeat the same cycle. The choice is most certainly in OUR hands.
